I hate wood ticks

Day by Day 2 Comments »

I more than hate them. I despise them. I do not understand their purpose on this world. I hate when I see one, and I hate more when I see one on me.

Wood ticks are arachnids. That is a spider as far as I’m concerned. Right after wood ticks, spiders are second on my list of bugs I don’t want to see. Ever. Read the rest of this entry »

My new toy

Day by Day 3 Comments »

Since it has been about 15 years since I bought a new (previously owned, but new to me) vehicle, I decided to go shopping the other day when it was raining and I couldn’t do some work in the yard. I needed a break anyway – you tend to lose the incentive after the second or third week.

I knew I wanted some sort of an SUV, or 4 wheel drive something or another. Like I said, it’s been a long time since I looked at cars, and I knew very little the last time, and a whole lot less this time. Read the rest of this entry »

What is REALLY under the tarp?

My next door neighbour is kind of a strange little man. He probably would say the same thing about me on his blog, but I’m pretty sure it’s a safe bet he won’t, because he is just now contemplating the move to buying a CD player for his house. He has one CD for his truck, because it didn’t come with a cassette or 8-track. His daughter made it for him.

Don’t get me wrong – he’s a good neighbour, willing to lend a hand whenever it’s needed, and never afraid to share his opinion on almost anything.

I call him the lawn mower man. In a way, he’s almost like my father. You never can have too many lawn mowers. But that’s another story for another day Read the rest of this entry »

Insulation

Day by Day 1 Comment »

I got up early today, so that I could insulate my attic. The concept was that if I got started before 8:00 AM that it wouldn’t be too hot in the attic, and I would be done by noon.

Of course, as I’ve said before, I’m easily distracted, and it was about 9:30 when I finally got to work. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s a Duck

Day by Day 1 Comment »

Been a long time since I’ve added anything new here.

The dog and I went for a walk today. That’s not unusual. I decided I would once again try to take some photos in Happy Valley, even though I had Bandit with me.

The ducks fascinate him. Today, he was determined he was going to get close to them. Bandit’s natural stocking instincts are a little rusty, but he did manage to get within a few feet of the birds before they flew away. Read the rest of this entry »

Pets and psychology and such

Day by Day No Comments »

Since the pet food recall a couple of weeks ago, I check every once and a while to make sure I haven’t been feeding my dog any of the contaminated products. So far, so good.

The subject has brought a lot of comments on the internet. Here’s one I thought of as just plain weird, because he is claiming those of us who treat our pet as more than a possession are probably psychologically unbalanced. Read the rest of this entry »

Dogs do not get it

Day by Day No Comments »

Dogs just don’t get it.

At least when it comes to going for a walk, with your camera, hoping for the opportunity to get some pictures of the ducks, beavers, and gophers we saw in Happy Valley the other day. Yeah, Yeah it’s not lions and tigers and elephants, but it still wildlife, and you gotta start somewhere.

Two days ago, the fact that there were all sorts of animals around us was absolutely no concern to Bandit. “We won’t bother them, they won’t bother us.” “Why are we stopping? It’s just some birds on the water.” “Come over here if you want something interesting. I found something that smells really bad. Do you want to roll on it first, or can I?” “Hey look at this – somebody left a candy bar wrapper right here!” Read the rest of this entry »

Family history (fun with old photos)

Day by Day No Comments »

It’s April Fools day. And here’s a brief and incomplete photo “family tree” to celebrate the occasion.

A couple of years ago, my brother and I were going through some old photos we salvaged from the farm. In most cases, we didn’t have the slightest inkling who the people were in the photos.

It did, however make us think. Our ancestors were a strange lot to say the least. They appear to be, shall we say, a few puppies short of a pet store.

Speaking of animals, that brings to light at least one of the recurring themes in the pictures. There is an obvious obsession with animals, and more often than not, poultry. Read the rest of this entry »
