Bet there were other things going on around the pond. Hundreds of ants were busily crawling all over the peony bush. I’ve been told that ants have to eat the wax off of the buds of peonies before the flower can open. I don’t know if this is a fact, but the ants certainly are attracted to the buds.

I don’t think that the peony has ever had as many buds on it as it has this year. Each bud is crawling with ants. It almost makes you dizzy to look at the plant because of all the movement.

In the picture below you can see that the peonies attract ants, and the ants attract spiders. If you look closely on the leaf on the left hand side, a spider waits for an unsuspecting ant to become lunch.
