The miraculous qualities of beer
Day by Day July 4th, 2007I had a shed built for my “other’ house.
The guys building it were anxious to get started, and I was anxious to get it built so I could demolish the old shed right beside the house. The problem was that the place I wanted the shed was full of rocks and weeds and very unlevel (is that a word?). The guys told me that they would build it on skids and I could just push it over later.
I was a little doubtful, but I agreed to let them start. In the meantime, I started getting the location ready for the shed. Picks and shovels were the only tools I had, and a quarter ton truck to haul the dirt away. I was optimistic I would get the ground ready before they completed the construction, and it would mean less weight to skid.
Didn’t happen.
The shed was finished the day before I was. So now I have a monster shed to skid. Yeah, right. At the time, a 10 X 10 building didn’t sound too big. When it’s time to move it, it becomes a massive project. Or at least in my mind.
Obviously, it was more than I could handle myself. If I bought enough beer, I might be able to convince some of the people I worked with to help me push it into place. When I asked, they agreed readily enough. One of them asked how long it would take, and one of the others replied quickly enough for me. “How much beer is there? It can be a ten minute job or an all-nighter”
I knew I would have to jack it up, and put it on some kind of rollers, and promised my helpers I would have that done before they got there. Surprisingly, I found I could actually move it by myself. Well, sort of wiggle it. This might not be so bad. Still, it had to be moved north about 12 feet, and east about 2 feet.
Anyways, the crew showed up at about five minutes after 4:00 and at about 4:08 it was in place. I couldn’t believe it. I had bought 24 beer, and asked for help from six people. All of them showed up (half of them after the shed was in place) and they drank all of my beer by 5:15.
Never underestimate the power of beer.
