the Kahekili highway
Day by Day, Photos May 2nd, 2010The long and winding and narrow road
At some point along the way, a sign said “State Highway Ends” followed closely by another sign saying “Narrow winding road for the next 17 miles.”
They weren’t kidding. And they weren’t messing around with the “Falling Rocks” signs neither. I don’t hink I’ve ever been on a road where there was a “Beware of Falling Rock” sign and there was evidence that rocks did fall. It was obvious here.
I tried taking some photos through the window of the car, until I thought they would be full of reflections from the glass. My next smart move was to hold the camera out of the side window and shoot a few photos as I was driving. I abandoned both ideas when I almost crashed into the side of the mountain when the camera strap caught on something. I guess I could wait until there was a wider spot in the road.
Fortunately, there was not much traffic. When you did meet oncoming vehicles, someone had to back up to a point where the road was wide enough for two cars.
