A little bit of manga

Day by Day 1 Comment »

I’ve always wanted to learn how to draw using the anime or manga technique. I was fascinated with the style long before it became as popular as it is in North America now. I didn’t know that it was called “anime” or “manga”, but I found the fantasy, cartoon-like images to be captivating. Read the rest of this entry »

How much does a penny cost?

I hardly ever look at my bank statements. I tend to simply trust the ATM machine, and when it tells me that the requested cash is not available, and to please choose another amount or account, that’s just fine with me. Read the rest of this entry »

A new job

Day by Day, On Retirement No Comments »

It’s official…

I have a new job with SaskWater. I officially begin working (for real) on the 19th of November, but I have orientation, and training and other preliminary stuff before that. It’s casual employment – that means they call me when no one else will work, I think – so I’m sure I’ll be working a lot of stat holidays and such. Read the rest of this entry »

More music trivia

Day by Day 2 Comments »

I have no idea where this one came from. I don’t remember it at all – but I like it.

It was one of the 45 RPM records in the box that has been living in my basement for several years. I have two questions to test your oldie and goldie trivia knowledge. The song is from 1961, and was recorded more or less as a joke, from a segment of a British TV series

  • Who recorded the song (as listed on the record label)
  • Who was it really?

Autumn is my favourite season.

There’s a pleasant temperature during the day, and I enjoy the “Crisp” feeling in the mornings and evenings – just put on a light jacket and all is good. Read the rest of this entry »

Name that tune

Day by Day 6 Comments »

Well, I’ve been recording some old records over the last couple of days.

I thought I’d post a short clip and make it a contest. The first to “Name That Tune” correctly gets to buy me a beer. All other contestants get to buy two beers. Read the rest of this entry »

Digital music (sort of)

Day by Day 2 Comments »

I bought a USB phonograph turntable today. I’ve been going to convert all of my old records to digital for several years now. I could do it (and have done some) by running a bunch of wires from my stereo to the computer, but it’s sort of cumbersome and awkward and ugly. Anyway, the new toy works just fine. I just plugged it into the computer, and it worked. No software to install, no drivers to load, and most important, no huge bundle of wires and adapters hooked up to the computer. If only my records were in better shape, it would all be wonderful. Read the rest of this entry »

Permanent socks

Generally, I don’t burn in the sun. I occasionally get a little red, and then over a day or two, the red turns into a tan.

Of course, with the recent heat wave (37 on Friday) we have had here in Moose Jaw, and the high UV index (it was at 9 – whatever that means) I was pushing it. Add to that, the fact that I seldom wear shorts, so there was white legs that never see the sun exposed for long days, a sunburn was inevitable. Read the rest of this entry »

The truck under the tarp revealed

Day by Day 3 Comments »

About two months ago, I mentioned my neighbour’s mysterious truck under the tarp.

Well, last weekend, the truck moved out of his back yard to the front street. At some point in time, I discovered that the truck belonged to a friend of my neighbour. The story is, that he bought the truck, but didn’t want his wife to know, because she had explicitly forbid him to buy a new truck. Read the rest of this entry »

The family photo

Day by Day 1 Comment »

When I bought my camera, I managed to convince the salesman to throw in a remote control. I didn’t know why I wanted it, I just wanted it because I wanted it.

I had never used it, but it was supposed to let me take a photo from as far as 25 feet away. So, when someone said they wanted a family photo while we were in Edmonton, I thought it was the chance to try it out. Read the rest of this entry »
