Repairing the foundation

Not happy with simply destroying the top floor, we proceeded to the basement.

The foundation on the south side of the house had been falling in for a couple of years. We found there there was actually two (maybe three) basement walls.  In any event, the wall supporting the side of the house needed to be repaired. Read the rest of this entry »

Knocking down lathe and plaster is a lot of work.  Here’s a couple of photos of the smaller bedroom.

As you can see, there was absolutely no insulation in the walls.  And the electrical wiring was, for lack of a better word, bizarre. Read the rest of this entry »

We decided it was finally time to begin work on the renovations on the little shack on 3rd Ave.

Of course, the first item on the list was to get rid of the old lathe and plaster on the second floor.

It’s actually been done for about a week, but I’ve been busy setting up an aquarium, draining fish ponds, raking leaves (again) and haven’t had the time to post the photos.

I finally drummed up the courage to remove all of the 2X4 studs and make a real opening between the living room and dining room yesterday.

I had Aaron Ireland help me – someone needed to know what they were doing. We built the temporary walls on each side, and went at it. The openingTo my surprise, it only took about an hour and a half to do. Read the rest of this entry »

How important is a toilet… really?

Yesterday I decided it was time to do something constructive.

Generally, I don’t burn in the sun. I occasionally get a little red, and then over a day or two, the red turns into a tan.

Of course, with the recent heat wave (37 on Friday) we have had here in Moose Jaw, and the high UV index (it was at 9 – whatever that means) I was pushing it. Add to that, the fact that I seldom wear shorts, so there was white legs that never see the sun exposed for long days, a sunburn was inevitable. Read the rest of this entry »

I had a shed built for my “other’ house.

The guys building it were anxious to get started, and I was anxious to get it built so I could demolish the old shed right beside the house. The problem was that the place I wanted the shed was full of rocks and weeds and very unlevel (is that a word?). The guys told me that they would build it on skids and I could just push it over later. Read the rest of this entry »

The bridge, pond, dirt and horny fish

For the last week I’ve been spending most of my time working in the yard of my “other” house. I understand that my priorities are probably not in the right place. I should be working inside the house so that I might be able to move into it in the near future.

Well, in a couple of weeks I hope to actually have the back yard done, so there’s always the possibility that a bucket of common sense will splash on me, and the inside work (where you actually live and eat and sleep) that should be done will be done. Read the rest of this entry »
